Bad Weather – Protect your Pipes

In the last few days, we’ve seen quite a bit of snow. Well, plenty more than last year anyway…

Did you know that freezing weather and snowfall are the busiest times for plumbers?

I recently visited my sister in Cheltenham and on arriving she’d had a major disaster!!!

Here’s pipes had frozen the night before the snow came and had burst  but luckily there were a
great team of plumbers in Cheltenham

that came out as an emergency in her hour of need.

It was interesting what they had to say

We’ve always thought that the pipes burst because of the ice expanding around the pipes.

But how wrong we were…

Did you know that as the ice expands, it pushes water toward the closed faucet?

This, in turn, causes a huge amount of water pressure to build between the ice blockage and the faucet, the pipe then ruptures under the pressure, usually at a spot where there’s very little or no ice at all.

How to prevent pipes freezing and bursting

When the weather turns very cold outside it’s imperative that there is a movement of water at all times.

The cold water must be able to drip (Nothing more than a drip is required) from the faucet from the exposed pipes.

Running water even at a steady state can help prevent pipes from freezing.

Last tip:  Please ensure that you leave the thermostat is set to the same temperature during the day and at night too.

I sincerely hope that you take the preventative measures I mentioned above because a burst pipe can potentially cause a lot of damage whilst also causing a lot of financial upset.

For outside pipes, should you have to repair them then it would make sense to purchase an outdoor dry work area shelter that will protect you whilst you make the repairs and if left up can protect against the wind chill and prevent further or repeat cracking.

You really don’t want to be forking out for new carpets and furniture at this time of year. (Xmas)
